Wood

Why is wood the most environmentally friendly material?

Wood is known to be the most natural renewable material we have, meaning it will have less impact on the environment than many other materials. Over 90% of the wood we use at Eikund is from forests in Europe, which grow by about 600,000 hectares each year. This shows that it’s a very readily available resource, which is not going to run out any time soon.

Several factors affect how long a wood product lasts, including the type of wood, the location of the product (interior or exterior) and the treatment applied to it. Hardwood, which is what we use, is the most durable type of wood, and treated properly it can last longer than a lifetime. The longer a wood product lasts, the less energy is spent on the production of new products, which in turn makes it better for the environment.

Wood can provide benefits for both mental and physical health. Increasing the amount of wood materials in the home or workplace reduces the number of man-made substances and potentially harmful chemicals in the environment. It has also been claimed that the introduction of wood to the interior has a stress-reducing effect.

Almost all our oak furniture is FSC™ certified. This means that the products are made from FSC™ certified wood, sourced from sustainable forests with responsible management that reduces deforestation and ensures the forests future preservation. Certified products are your assurance that Eikund’s wooden furniture has been produced in a socially, economically and environmentally responsible way. Our short-term focus is to incorporate the FSC™ standard into all our products, also those made of walnut.

Wood is a precious natural resource, and we are committed to using every piece to its fullest. Our furniture is crafted from solid wood into design classics. Excess wood is inevitable, but we are using every little piece possible.
